Questions (FAQ)

How long will I have to take off from work?

Depending upon the procedure, you may have to take off 1-2 days.

When can I drive?

You will need someone to drive you the day of surgery. After that, you may drive if you feel confident that your vision and eye comfort will allow you to drive safely.

If I have diabetes can I still have LASIK surgery?

Yes, if your diabetes is under control.

Can LASIK surgery correct astigmatism?

Yes, except in extreme cases.

What kind of anesthesia is used?

Numbing eye drops are the only anesthesia we use. No needles or IV drugs are used. You also have the option to take 5 mg of Valium before surgery to help you relax.

Do I need to be out of my contact lenses before surgery?

Yes, for optimum results you will need to be out of your contact lenses so that your corneas can return to their normal shape. You will need to remove them prior to your exam and surgery according to the following schedule:

Soft lenses - 2 weeks
Toric or Extended wear lenses - 4 weeks
RGP or Hard lenses - 4 weeks plus 1 month for every decade of wear

How old do I have to be before I can have LASIK surgery?

You will need to be at least 18 years of age and have a stable prescription for 1 year. Ideally, patients need to be between the ages of 18 and 60. The patient and their family must understand that if the patient continues to grow he/she will become near-sighted again requiring an enhancement procedure in the future.

Can you correct my vision for reading?

Yes, with mono-vision correction. Mono-vision is correcting one eye for distance and one eye for near vision.

Do you use IntraLase? If not, why?

No, we do not. Dr. Fischer does not see any advantage of IntraLase over a mechanical microkeratome in regards to visual outcomes.
