Premium Lens Implants
Premium Lens Implants For After Cataract Surgery
Depending on your specific visual condition different types of intraocular lenses maybe applicable. Please consult with the doctors at Family Eye Center to get a better idea of what premium lens implant would help you see the best. Listed below are some of the options that the doctors at Family Eye Center use.
ACRYSOF® ReSTOR® IOL Lens
What is it? The ACRYSOF® ReSTOR® Apodized Diffractive Optic Posterior IOL is an artificial lens implanted in the eye to restore vision after a clouded natural lens (cataract) is removed.
The lens of the IOL is convex on both sides (biconvex) and made of a soft plastic that can be folded prior to insertion, allowing placement through an incision smaller than the optic diameter of the lens. After surgical insertion into the eye, the lens gently unfolds to restore vision. The supporting arms (haptics) provide for proper positioning of the IOL within the eye.
How does it work? The ACRYSOF® ReSTOR® IOL is intended to be positioned in the posterior chamber of the eye, replacing the natural lens. This position allows the IOL to correct the visual impairment of aphakia (absence of the natural lens). The ACRYSOF® ReSTOR® IOL has a biconvex optic that is shaped using a special process called apodized diffraction to provide increased depth of focus.
When is it used? The ACRYSOF® ReSTOR® IOL is used in adult patients with and without presbyopia, who desire near, intermediate and distance vision with increased independence from glasses following cataract surgery.
What will it accomplish? The ACRYSOF® ReSTOR® IOL has been shown in a clinical study to provide good near, intermediate and distance vision with increased independence from glasses in patients who have undergone cataract surgery.
When should it not be used? There are no known contraindications.

Toric Lens Implants
If you are going to require cataract surgery and are considering your lens implant you first need to understand if you have an astigmatism. Many patients suffer from this common eye condition known as an astigmatism their entire life and it is routinely corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Even through laser vision correction astigmatism can be corrected. When you have an astigmatism and a cataract you will need to consider a special IOL that will help you deal with the astigmatism after cataract surgery. Cataract patients who have a pre-existing astigmatism can benefit from a surgical procedure that can correct both the cataract and astigmatism. Cataract patients who suffer from astigmatism can request a Toric IOL to correct their vision without the need of contacts or glasses.
In many cases an astigmatism can lead to blurred or impaired vision if it becomes moderate or severe. The cause of the blurred and impaired vision is the result of the eye's cornea or lens having an irregular shape. A normal eye's cornea and lens have a circular shape whereas an eye with an astigmatism has a longer more oval shape.
Over the past ten years, doctors have looked for ways to help correct astigmatisms in cataract patients. Surgeons have tried to alter the shape of the cornea by making an incision (LRI, Limbal Relaxing Incisions) during the cataract surgery. Now, with the creation of the Toric IOLs, vision can be improved or repaired without more surgery. The Toric IOL helps to refocus vision to eye once the natural lens and the cataract have been removed from the patient. The design of the Toric IOL is also used to correct pre-existing astigmatism with the same technology as contact lenses. The Toric IOL has the ability to help patients from being dependent on corrective lenses after they've had cataract surgery.
Dr. Fischer uses the advanced ALCON Toric IOL in cataract surgery cases where astigmatic correction is required. He has undergone specialized training to perform this surgery optimally. Your source for Toric IOL in Minnesota.
