Refractive Surgery
LASEK
LASEK, LASer Epithelial Keratomileusis, is another form of advanced surface ablation, similar to EPI-LASIK.In our practice, the LASEK procedure is used mostly for people with corneas that are too thin or flat for traditional LASIK, or for people with dry eyes, or anyone with any predisposing factors which may cause them to develop postoperative corneal ectasia. It can also be used when an enhancement procedure is needed for a patient who originally had LASIK or EPI-LASIK.It was developed as an alternative to lessen the postoperative discomfort traditionally associated with PRK, for patients who are not ideal candidates for regular LASIK.
With LASEK, the epithelium (outer layer of cornea), is loosened with an alcohol solution that Dr. Fischer places on the eye. After the solution is sponged from the eye, Dr. Fischer will gently remove the loosened epithelial cells. The laser treatment is then applied. Afterward, a bandage contact lens is applied. This contact lens will help with the healing process and your comfort. The doctor will remove the bandage contact lens after 3-6 days.
In many ways, what you can expect from LASEK is similar to EPI-LASIK.You will feel eye irritation during the first few days following surgery. The time it takes to recover good vision is longer than with traditional LASIK and recovery varies from one patient to the next.
EPI-LASIK
EPI-LASIK, Epithelial Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis, is an advanced type of corneal ablation. EPI-LASIK is similar to LASEK and PRK in that it is used for patients who have thin corneas, have dry eye, or might otherwise not be a good candidate for regular LASIK surgery.
With EPI-LASIK, no alcohol solution is used, which helps lessen the postoperative discomfort. Instead, a specially designed microkeratome instrument is used to gently separate the epithelium from the underlying Bowman’s Membrane. Once the epithelium layer has been removed, the laser is then applied and reshapes the cornea to correct your prescription. A bandage contact lens is applied to allow the new epithelium, or skin layer, to fully heal and recover the surface of the cornea. This contact lens is to help you with the epithelial healing process and provide comfort. This contact will be removed after 3-6 days.
