At Family Center Eye Center, a complete examination will include a detailed patient history. Some of this information will be taken by the technician the rest will be taken by your doctor. During the course of your general eye exam, various tests will be performed to determine color vision, depth perception, eye muscle coordination, response of pupils to light, peripheral vision, contrast sensitivity, intraocular pressure, examination of eyelids and the external appearance of the eye and the internal findings of the retina. The examination determines the health and condition of your eyes. A complete examination may also find signs of systemic diseases that go beyond just the health of your eye but affect your whole body.

Some of the tests you may encounter during one of your yearly exams are:

  • Refraction.  It is a measure of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and determines the need for correction by glasses or contact lenses.
  • The Slit Lamp and the opthalmoscope will magnify the eye and allows the doctor to examine the conjunctiva, cornea, iris, front chamber of the eye and the crystalline lens. Also it will allow the doctor to inspect the retina and its blood vessels, the head of the optic nerve, and the vitreous humor, which is the fluid that fills the eye. A dialated pupil will allow detection of bleeding in the eye, vascular disorders such as, hypertension and diabetes and disorders of the retina.
  • Tonometry is a measurement of the pressure inside the eye. The reading of the intraocular pressure determines the risk of glaucoma.

An eye examination is a basic requirement for good vision, any changes of vision should be addressed so they can be treated and diagnosed.

At Family Eye Center, we provide eye examinations for the entire family.  From pre-school, for that first examination of the child’s eye, to teens wanting those contacts.   From adults, looking for answers regarding lasik surgery options, to seniors who are facing cataract surgery or multifocal lens replacement.
